Year 6 Maths Visit to Huntingdon Racecourse
Year 6 pupils swapped their school ties for racing silks when they visited Huntingdon racecourse to experience maths in action. Guided by an ex-jockey, and the Clerk of the Course, children learned about the important relationship between weight and performance in racing, and how the handicapping system works. They practised their numeracy skills working out weights and measures, and used a trundle wheel to calculate distances in the Parade Ring – establishing how many horses can safely parade at one time. The 10- and 11-year-olds also looked closely at the construction of hurdles and fences, learning how they are built, and measuring their height and spread.
