Over the past week, Kimbolton School joined in the celebrations for the European Day of Languages, hosting a variety of events to promote language learning and cultural appreciation.

Students were immersed in languages through various linguistic activities. These included a special Languages Day Assembly, led by our Head of French Madame Griggs, where students and staff gathered to celebrate the diversity of languages spoken at the school. Over 15 languages were featured by staff and students in a multilingual retelling of the classic tale, showcasing the diverse linguistic talents across the school. Students also took part in an interactive quiz, encouraging students to reflect on the value of learning new languages. 

The celebrations extended into the classroom, where Sixth Form language students visited younger year groups to share their experiences with language learning. Notably, Monty C. spoke to the 2nd Form about his journey with both French and Spanish. He discussed the skills he has developed, how learning different languages has enriched his education, and its importance for his future career. Monty, who aspires to join the army, highlighted how relevant language learning is to many professions, including his chosen path.

In addition, Mia and Tom, also in the Upper Sixth, gave a brief talk to First Formers about how their French studies complement their A Level subjects in Maths and Sciences, broadening the skills they are developing for life. The First Formers were particularly impressed as Mia and Tom, two of the school’s top linguists, spoke fluently and spontaneously in French about the pros and cons of immigration.

As part of the European Day of Languages celebrations, we hosted a Bake-Off competition, where students created wonderful cupcakes inspired by different countries, languages, and cultures. The event raised £79 for Survival International, a charity that supports indigenous communities around the world.

In addition to the Bake-Off, the Duolingo Challenge encouraged students to hone their language skills, and we congratulate Georgina C. for winning the challenge.

The dining hall offered a special international menu, giving students a taste of dishes from around the world, with a similar meal enjoyed by our boarders in the evening.

During break time in the following week, a charity 'bake off' cake sale took place, showcasing cakes inspired by different countries, languages, and cultures. The bake-off featured some wonderfully creative designs, with all proceeds going to a good cause.

Looking ahead, our Prep School is preparing to host a catwalk fashion parade next week, celebrating diversity and the variety of languages spoken by students. This exciting event will highlight the importance of cultural appreciation and inclusion through fashion.

Kimbolton School's Languages Department offers a year-round programme of activities, from poetry reading competitions and French film nights to salsa classes and the Kimbolton Culture Club. Students can also join French and Spanish clubs at lunchtime and participate in the United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO) challenge later this year, as well as trips abroad that offer real-world opportunities to practise their language skills.

Kimbolton School continues to inspire its students to explore the world of languages, encouraging them to embrace the benefits of multilingual communication and cultural diversity.
